A closed-off 1921 kitchen opened into a working, light-filled center of the house.
The original kitchen was three small rooms: a galley, a breakfast nook and a rear porch that had been enclosed sometime in the 1960s. None of them worked, and the wall between them turned out to be carrying roof load.
We engineered a flush beam so the ceiling could stay flat, rebuilt the rear wall to current envelope standards, and rerouted the entire electrical panel feed that a previous owner had run through a closet.
The finished kitchen keeps the house's Craftsman proportions — quarter-sawn oak, simple shaker fronts, an unlacquered brass that will patina — while functioning like a modern kitchen for a family of five.
